The world is changing faster than our schools are. Our young people are inheriting a planet shaped by climate crisis, artificial intelligence, and a pervasive sense of disconnection. Yet our education systems, by and large, have not caught up. They continue to operate as if we’re preparing children for a world that no longer exists. This realisation sits at the heart of why I’m joining Regeneration27, a global gathering that brings together researchers, educators, young leaders and change makers to ask hard questions about what we’re doing in classrooms and learning spaces, and to build something better in response.
The Gathering
From 24 to 28 February 2027, at Green School Bali, we’re coming together for five intensive days. It’s not your typical conference. There are no keynotes followed by rows of passive audiences. Instead, we’ll gather in learning pods, engage in story circles, take field immersions, and listen to morning provocations from some of the most thoughtful minds working on education and regeneration today.
The guiding voices include Dr Bayo Akomolafe, whose work challenges us to slow down and think differently about time and change. Clover Hogan brings her expertise in environmental psychology and youth agency. Daniel Christian Wahl draws connections between regenerative design and transformative education. Sandra Wooltorton brings deep experience in international education and cultural perspectives. These are people who understand that what we’re doing now isn’t working, and who are actively building alternatives.
Why This Matters for Science Education
As a scientist and an educator, I’ve spent years thinking about how we teach young people to engage with the natural world. Through Junior Einsteins Science Club®, we’ve developed a primary science education system that tries to move beyond the traditional curriculum. We’ve created space for real inquiry, for hands-on learning, for genuine engagement with the scientific method and with nature itself.
But I’ve also seen the limitations. Young people know there’s a climate crisis. They’re aware that artificial intelligence is reshaping their futures. They sense that something is disconnected, that the learning they’re doing in school doesn’t always connect to the world they’re actually living in. And many of them feel overwhelmed by it all.
Regeneration27 is asking a harder question: what if we put regenerative thinking at the centre of education from the very beginning? Not as an add-on or a special unit, but as the foundation for how we teach young people to think, question, problem-solve and build.
Regenerative Education Isn’t Marginal Any More
There’s a tendency in education to treat sustainability, climate literacy, and systems thinking as extra topics, things you fit in when you can. As if preparing young people to understand and respond to the world they’re growing up in is somehow optional.
It’s not. And it can’t be.
Regenerative education—education that actively builds capacity, restores relationships, and creates better futures—needs to be at the centre, not the margins. It’s about teaching children to think like scientists, systems designers and citizens at the same time. To ask not just “how does this work?” but “what is this for, who does it affect, and how might we do better?”
This shift requires rethinking what we value in education. It means moving beyond test scores and measurable outcomes to ask questions about belonging, agency, resilience and hope. It means drawing on indigenous knowledge alongside western science. It means getting young people outside, into nature, into their communities, into real problems they can actually help solve.
What Comes Next
I am is really excited about being part of this community. Regeneration27 isn’t about finding THE answer. It’s about gathering people who are asking the right questions, learning from each other, and building momentum around a different approach to education.
The work is urgent. Young people are waiting for the adults in their lives to finally catch up. They don’t need us to have perfect solutions. They need us to be honest about the world they’re inheriting, to take responsibility for our part in it, and to invite them into the work of building something better.
That’s what Regeneration27 is about. And I can’t wait to see what we create together.
