Lusk 6 week Science Club – Fridays 6pm -7:30pm

5 week science club at St Macullins Centre (The Cottage Community Centre, LUSK) for children aged 5 – 12 years old

Fridays 6pm -7:30pm (in the Old Church Building)

Term 1:   Started from 23rd September and runs every Friday until 21st October

€90 per child

Children are supplied with lab coats & goggles. They make their own experiments & take home experiments from science club! Hands on, fun STEM learning.

Topics:

Week 1: Slime Science: Non Newtonian fluids & cross linking polymers.

Punch the ooblek slime to observe changes in its viscosity! Each child makes & takes home their own stretchy polymer slime. Why do scientists care about slime?! We learn about the importance of slime for animals to grow food, act as a moisturiser & lots more.

Week 2: Blubber Gloves & Coke Mentos Explosions

Learn about Arctic animals & adaptations. Make a blubber glove to understand how animals keep insulated in cold temperatures & test it in some icy cool water! We then take a trip outside for the famous COKE & MENTOS EXPLOSION! Children learn how nucleation sites cause the mentos & coke to explode & reach heights of 20+ feet!

Week 3: Plasma Ball

Lets make a lightsabre with our Tesla coil like plasma ball. Children gain an understanding of conductors & insulators by testing materials on our plasma ball. We teach children about open/closed circuits with electricity glow sticks!

Week 4: Cartoon Capers

Optical illusions- how the eye tricks the brain. We use praxinoscopes, zoetropes & thaumatropes to observe illusions happening right before our eyes! Each child makes their own cartoon caper thaumatrope to take home.

Week 5: Marble Run

Phenomenal physics with our marble run construction. Children gain an understanding of Velocity, Speed & Momentum in this hands on activity. Can we engineer an alternative design to slow our marble run ?

Week 6: Engineering Bridges

Children design and construct a bridge. We test different shapes & structures to identify the strongest. Children also use the scientific skills of prediction, observation, teamwork communication, comparison, measurement, problem solving, and cooperative investigation by working in teams.
