Are Your Children ‘Junior Einsteins’ Yet? Science Week and STEM Events for Schools in Ireland
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) is more important than ever, and children in Ireland now have the opportunity to dive into exciting hands-on science experiences with Junior Einsteins Science Club. Founded by Irish scientist and mum Tracey-Jane Cassidy MA MSc, this innovative science club is inspiring kids to become the scientists and innovators of tomorrow.
What is STEM (and STEAM)?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths, while STEAM includes an additional focus on Art. These disciplines encourage creativity, problem-solving, and innovation—essential skills for the future. At Junior Einsteins Science Club, children experience STEM in an engaging and interactive way, helping them develop a passion for learning and discovery.
Making Hands-On Science Accessible to All Kids
“Children simply aren’t doing enough hands-on science in primary schools,” explains Tracey-Jane Cassidy. “At Junior Einsteins, we’re solving that problem by delivering real, themed, practical science events that are fun, educational, and interactive.”
Junior Einsteins Science Club has successfully brought exciting STEM experiences to hundreds of thousands of Irish schoolchildren. From science parties and camps to school workshops and science shows, their mission is to make science accessible, fun, and impactful for children of all ages.
Fun, Fast-Paced STEM Activities for Kids
The magic of Junior Einsteins lies in its hands-on experiments that children love. Wearing lab coats and goggles, kids dive into messy, exciting activities while learning key scientific principles.
Here are some of the incredible experiments children get to experience:
- Slime-Making: Kids learn about long-chain polymerisation and Non-Newtonian fluids.
- Van de Graaff Generator: Watch as Barbie gets a hair-raising experience while learning about voltage and current.
- Plasma Ball Lightsabers: Discover how electricity flows by lighting a lightsaber with a plasma ball.
- Rocket Races: Explore propulsion through fun and competitive rocket launches.
- Fossil Making, Forensics, and Chemistry: Engage with paleontology, forensic science, and exothermic reactions like making elephant toothpaste.
Children are also introduced to topics like marine biology, geology, quantum physics (with Nerf guns!), and engineering. Every activity is designed to inspire curiosity and critical thinking, helping kids develop a lifelong love for science.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists
At Junior Einsteins, the focus is on teaching children “how to think, not what to think”. This approach equips kids with problem-solving skills and resilience, preparing them for an ever-changing world.
“We hope our Junior Einsteins will develop a love of science in primary school, continue to study STEM in secondary school, and eventually pursue third-level education and careers in science,” says Cassidy. “We need more scientists!”
STEM Education for Schools Across Ireland and Beyond
Junior Einsteins Science Club offers a wide range of programs for schools, including:
- Whole-School Science Shows and STEM Workshops
- STEM Ambassador Programmes: Teachers are trained to run Junior Einsteins Science Clubs in their own schools.
