12 Lessons I’ve Learned as a Franchisor

Franchising isn’t for the faint-hearted. It’s not just about building a strong brand—it’s about building strong people, strong systems, and a business that works in the real world. 12 Lessons I’ve Learned as a Franchisor

When I started Junior Einsteins Science Club®, I wanted to deliver hands-on, high-energy science experiences to children. That mission still drives everything we do—but scaling it meant becoming a franchisor. That shift comes with its own set of lessons—practical, personal, and often hard-won.

Here are 12 lessons I’ve learned:

1. Your franchisees need grit. So do you.
It’s not enough to hand over a proven model. You have to back franchisees who can weather slow months, rejections, and the ups and downs of small business life. This is about resilience, not just motivation and enthusiasm. Same goes for you as franchisor.

2. Keep it simple—or it won’t scale.
Everything from your operations manual to your equipment list must be clear, repeatable, and easy to action. Complexity kills consistency. Simplicity gets results.

3. You’ll do everything at the start—then learn to let go.
I’ve done sales calls, packed kits, trained staff, built marketing funnels, and chased invoices. You can’t outsource understanding. But as you grow, you must stop being the bottleneck and start being the builder. Train your franchisees thoroughly. Be present. Offer guidance. But then let them fly. Give them the independence to make the business their own within the structure you’ve created. That’s how real ownership—and real growth—happens.

4. Protect what you’ve built.
Your systems, branding, and educational content are assets. Make sure your intellectual property is locked down and enforce it when needed. Not everyone plays fair—be ready.

5. Training is a process, not a date on the calendar.
Initial training is just the beginning. Ongoing development, check-ins, bite-sized refreshers, and accountability make all the difference. A franchise model lives or dies by the quality of what happens after day one.

6. Sales isn’t a mystery. It’s a system.
We give franchisees tested sales scripts, templates, advertising strategies, and prompts. The challenge isn’t creating tools—it’s getting franchisees to actually use them consistently. When they do, it works.

7. Some leads won’t bite right away—but they come back.
We’ve seen it repeatedly. A school says no. A venue doesn’t reply. A parent hesitates. But once they see the energy and quality of our events, they circle back. Be patient, be persistent, and stay visible.

8. Franchising is equal parts structure and instinct.
You need SOPs, guidelines, and brand consistency. But you also need to trust your gut when choosing people, launching new offers, or pivoting strategy. This isn’t corporate. This is real business.

9. Every territory is different—adapt without diluting.
Some franchisees thrive best through camps, others through after-school clubs or parties. The model needs room for local realities, but brand values and standards must never drop. Flex the method, not the mission.

10. There’s no finish line.
Franchising is a living system. You’re always improving, updating, training, solving problems. That’s not a burden—it’s a privilege. If you want to build something that lasts, keep building.

11. Consistency beats talent every time.
Flashy ideas and big personalities won’t build a sustainable business. The franchisees who show up every day, follow the systems, post the ads, make the calls, and keep going—even when it’s hard—are the ones who succeed.

12. Confidence comes from doing uncomfortable things—with the right support.
Making TikToks, sending sales emails, picking up the phone to cold-call schools—none of it comes naturally to most people. But with scripts, prompts, encouragement, and examples, they can do it. And once they do, the momentum builds.

If you’re considering becoming a franchisor—or joining a franchise—understand this: it’s not just about business models. It’s about people, systems, and staying power.

To our incredible franchisees, science instructors, and partners: thank you. You’re the reason this works.

Let’s keep growing.
